Spanish for the Medical Professions I

Spanish for the Medical Professions I is an intermediate-to-advanced Spanish course designed for healthcare professionals who wish to provide improved care to Spanish-speaking patients. In this course, students will learn how to conduct patient intakes, obtain medical histories, perform basic physical examinations, discuss symptoms, and communicate about diagnoses, medications, and prescriptions in Spanish.
What makes this course unique is its integration of three professional perspectives:
Spanish Language Instructor: Focuses on the mechanics of the language, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and effective communication strategies.
Medical Interpreter: Provides insight into cultural considerations, interpretation of meaning, and common communication challenges between healthcare providers and Spanish-speaking patients.
Medical Professional: Contributes practical medical knowledge, terminology, and real-world clinical applications.
Through role-plays, case studies, and hands-on practice, students will develop the language skills and cultural competence necessary to navigate common healthcare interactions with greater confidence and accuracy.
Prerequisite: Students must have successfully completed Vecino Center Spanish Level 4 or demonstrate equivalent proficiency by placing out of Level 4 through the Vecino Center placement exam.
